WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

Great Britain initiated proceedings, even informally, in the London Olympics as they marked their debut in the championships with a hard-earned victory over New Zealand courtesy of a second half goal from Steph Houghton at the ‘Millenium’ in sunny Cardiff.

The ‘Kiwis’ started the better in both halves but Britain worked their way back into the ascendancy to carve out a host of chances, Anita Asante heading against the post, and eventually Houghton settled the game and nerves as she curled a fabulous freekick into the bottom corner midway through the second period.

In other first-day games, USA turned round a two-goal deficit within the first quarter of the game to claim an emphatic 4-2 victory over France as Alex Morgan scored twice for the winners and North Korea prevailed over Colombia 2-0.
