IAAF have said that the qualifying standards in six events for the Olympics in London have eased following a review of the results of the recent World Championships in Daegu, as well as the global season lists, so that it is ensured that a proper number of athletes will be on show therein.

Interestingly, five out of the six disciplines referred to fall into the women’s court, three on the track and two throws, with only the 400m shifting marks on the men’s side.

Nevertheless, these latest amendments mean very little to British athletes who remain subject to the UK Athletics selection policy and standards unless the national governing body opt to follow suit and lay out corresponding new qualifying marks in the wake.

The amended Olympic qualifying standards read as follows:

400m A 45.30 – B 45.90

400m A 51.55 – B 52.35

5000m A 15:20.00 – B 15:30.00

400mh A 55.50 – B 56.65

Shot A 18.30 – B 17.20

Javelin A 61.00 (B standard remains as has been)
